Talking to Our Kids in Times of Crisis

With the recent tragic shooting at Apalachee High School, kids may be asking questions. Dr. Shelly Melia created this video for our church (First Baptist Church, Monroe) with some helpful tips about talking to our kids in times of crisis. Dr. Melia is an Associate Dean and Children’s Ministry Program Director at Dallas Baptist University. She was also in Kids Ministry for over 25 years and is a licensed professional counselor specialized in grief and resilience.

Not only is this video helpful for us as parents, grandparents, and Kids Ministry leaders in ministering to and talking to kids in light of the school shooting, but it is also a valuable resource for talking to kids who have experienced any kind of trauma.

Using this link, you can view a post Dr. Melia prepared after the tragedy of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas in 2022. It also shares tips for parenting through these tragedies.

Please keep the Apalachee High School Community in your prayers.
